Jockey's Ridge Barbecue

A fun filled day here in Manteo! The crew headed to Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head for the morning and lunch. We grilled some bratwursts and then headed to the beach for a swim in the ocean.

After Jockeys Ridge and swimming in the ocean, the girls decided to head over to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. The aquarium is the largest aquarium in the state — a 285,000-gallon ocean tank complete with sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of fish. Throughout the aquarium are exhibit tanks filled with fishes of North Carolina coastal habitats, including sharks and rays. They saw eels, sea turtles and more than 200 fishes in a shipwreck habitat displaying a 1/3-scale replica of the USS Monitor. They even enjoyed the hands on area of the aquarium in which they were able to pet sting rays.

Manteo

Ahoy there from Manteo! We made our way out of the the Alligator River this morning after a delicious bacon egg and cheese breakfast. Along the way we stopped in the Albemarle Sound during a lull in the wind for a swim and a lesson on how to check the propeller and rudder for fouling. Arriving in Manteo, the girls managed to safely dock the Jeanie B, 72 ft. long, into a 65 ft. Slip.

SAIL on: Alligator River

We've reached the Alligator river and are bedded in for the night. After leaving Belhaven this morning, shortly after refueling and picking up a few provisions, we motored through the long Alligator-Pungo River Canal and we were able to raise the sails for a down-wind sail through Alligator River to the Alligator River Marina. We spent the evening cooking chili and eating ice cream. The girls even started an impromptu dance party on the docks.

By tomorrow evening we hope to reach Manteo and with a south wind we should be able to sail most of the day, a stark contrast to the long motor through the canal today. Check out a live track of our voyage, courtesy of Lundy Charters, here.

Bon Voyage

and their off! The Jeannie B set sail this morning from the Camp Sea Gull pier. The crew was excited for a day of sailing and navigating towards Belhaven, NC. More to come....

Day one of Seafarer Sail On

The girls have arrived for S.A.I.L. on 2010 and we're off to a great start! The program will take us on a 14 day sailing trip around the outer banks of North Carolina. The girls arrived on the afternoon of June 13th and are spending their first two days at Camp Seafarer getting acquainted with the boat and prepared for the trip. We set out tomorrow morning, hoping to make it to the Pungo River near Bellhaven, NC by tomorrow evening.
